MFT exam prep, a plan by domain weight
Prepare for the national exam the way it is weighted. The biggest single domain is ethics, law and professional standards, at 19%, and follows a code revised in January 2026; the other five sit at 16% or 17% each, so none can be skipped. First, confirm your books follow the current blueprint.

Is your prep material current?
The blueprint in force is the 2026 blueprint from the 2024–2025 role delineation study. Signs your book or course is older than this blueprint:
- it quotes the AAMFT Code of Ethics by its 2015 edition, or says nothing about the revision effective January 1, 2026;
- it has no material on teletherapy or on artificial intelligence, both of which appear in the 2026 outline;
- it describes the exam as 180 scored questions with no mention of pretest items. That is right for 2026 windows only.
Split your time by weight
Give each domain about its share of your hours, then move time toward the domains your practice results show you miss. Ethics deserves a little more than its weight: it is the largest domain and the one where older books are most likely to be wrong.

Domain by domain: the core material
- The practice of systemic therapy: the founding models and their vocabulary, from Bowen and Minuchin to the Milan team, and the systems concepts under them.
- Assessing, hypothesizing and diagnosing: family maps such as the genogram, couple and family measures, life-cycle stages, and diagnosis read in its relational context.
- Designing and conducting treatment: who attends and in what order, structural and strategic moves, narrative and solution-focused work, couple models.
- Evaluating and terminating treatment: tracking progress with the whole system and ending in a way that holds.
- Managing crisis situations: partner violence, abuse disclosed in a family session, safety planning that involves relatives.
- AAMFT Code of Ethics: the nine standards, plus the federal and state law the domain adds.
Keep the system in view, even on diagnosis items
Task 02.17 of the blueprint asks you to use the DSM and ICD while keeping a systems perspective. On this exam the best answer to a diagnostic item often adds the family context or the relational pattern rather than a bare label. Criteria-level DSM-5-TR study belongs to the NCMHCE intake and diagnosis pages; individual theories such as REBT or person-centered therapy are covered on counseling theories.
Practice under exam conditions
The exam gives four hours for 180 questions, roughly 80 seconds each, with no scheduled break. Build to at least one full-length timed sitting before your window.
AMFTRB's own option is two practice exams built from retired items, sold per attempt, with feedback by domain but no answer key. The handbook says AMFTRB cannot recommend study materials beyond the handbook itself and these practice exams (2026 handbook). Use one early as a baseline and one late as a check; between them, drill weak domains on the practice test and the six domain pages; each answer choice there carries its own explanation.
Choosing a prep course
Commercial prep for this exam includes AATBS, the Therapist Development Center, Ben Caldwell's materials, Gerry Grossman's seminars, Family Solutions Institute and Springer's review book, among others; we have no tie to any of them. Before buying, check two things. Some of these brands are best known for California's BBS exams, which are not the national exam, so confirm the product is for the AMFTRB exam. And check that its ethics content quotes the 2026 AAMFT Code.

Studying for the MFT exam, quick answers
Which domain should get the most time?
Ethics, law and professional standards: it carries 19% of the exam and rests on the revised AAMFT Code. After that, follow your own weak spots; the other domains are within a point of each other.
Does AMFTRB endorse any prep book or course?
No. Its handbook says it cannot recommend materials beyond the handbook and its own practice exams.
Is a California course enough for the national exam?
Not by default. California's BBS exams have their own content and law sections. Use material written for the AMFTRB blueprint.
